The metamorphosis of the great Spanish painter

Promoted and created by the City of Milan – Cultura, Palazzo Reale and  MondoMostreSkira – the “Picasso Metamorfosi” exhibition is curated by Pascale Picard, director of the civic museums of Avignon. A leg of the European triennial Picasso-Méditerranée exhibition – promoted by the Picasso Museum in Paris along with other international institutions – “Picasso Metamorfosi” features about 200 works that include those by Picasso, as well as additional ancient works, which were an inspiration to the great master, borrowed from the Musée National Picasso in Paris and other important European museums. The project is part of a study on the great artist undertaken over decades by the Palazzo Reale. An actual cycle of exhibitions on Picasso that has made the relationship between the Spanish maestro and Milan a special one. It began with Guernica in the Sala delle Cariatidi in 1953, an exceptional event and a genuine gift that Picasso made to the city.  Almost half a century later, this was followed by a retrospective in September 2001, four days after the attacks on the World Trade Center, organized with the collaboration of the artist’s heirs and, finally, there was his monographic review in 2012.  Through a vast chronological excursus, this  review documented the variety of techniques and means of expression that distinguished Picasso.  Instead, with “Picasso Metamorfosi”, antiquity in its different forms will represent the mythologies he reinvented, presented in the six sections of the exhibition with the works of the great artist displayed beside those from ancient art – ceramics, vases, statues, votive plaques, reliefs, idols, and stelae – pieces that inspired and deeply influenced him. The exhibition will open at the Palazzo Reale in Milan on October 18th until February 17th, 2019.
