Marios, Political Fashion

The Marios collection for Autumn/Winter 2017 revolves around a provocative question: can clothes become political and social manifestos?

Can fashion, as a whole and in its various forms, give support and answers to political and social issues? Can fashion and art actively engage and cooperate in order to share ideas? Starting from the textile works by the Polish artist Goshka Makuga, Marios created a collection for the coming colder season in which there is space for tailored garments and for social awareness. Therefore, the answer to the question with which we began is most definitely yes.

As stated before, the main source of inspiration is the accuracy of the two tapestries by Goshka, both of which contain a strong political message which is carried forward by Marios by playing with the ‘Back to Front’ concept, i.e. showing both the front and the back of the artworks on different fabrics. The front becomes figurative and very meaningful. The back takes on abstract connotations and allows for tactile sensations.

But this extraordinary creative game goes even deeper: some styles and fabrics are their exact opposite, combined and mismatched according to a ‘Back to Front, Front to Back’ approach. The prints convey not only the concept of overturning the original work but also become political banners. Therefore artworks assume a dynamism that can be seen and admired and turns into politically conscious messages as the garments are worn.
