Fashion makes sense

Over 150 emerging designer took the stage at the 9th edition of FashionClash Festival in Maastricht, Holland

FashionClash Festival, the unique four-day event, gathered the collections of over 150 young designers from all over the planet. Emerging talents from Italy, Spain, China, Switzerland, The Netherlands, France, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Uruguay, Australia, United Kingdom and Belgium showcased their latest proposals through fashion shows, presentations, static and digital installations, dance and art performances.

Among the new developments of this new edition, I must mention the long awaited launch of the Forza Fashion House Maastricht creative incubator and to the Fashion Makes Sense LAB initiative.

In my opinion, the curators of the event, whose very appropriate themes was Fashion Makes Sense, did a truly terrific job in selecting the designers. A  number of prizes were awarded to Federico Cina, who won the FashionClash Festival 2017 Talent and the One To Watch 2017 Award, and also to Johanna Hehemeyer-Cürten, Ebby Port, Maarten van Mulken, L’EGSQÈRE, Ysabel Cloherty.

I loved the beautiful romantic proposals by Alessandro Trincone and by Daria D’Ambrosio and to directional menswear by LAU by Laura Verdonk. I also really liked the directional minimalism by Hocheol Moon, by Nika and especially by TomNenukko and its denim pieces. On the other hand, I appreciated the fun-filled collection by Rita Alfonso and the looks that showed under the Clash Project umbrella.

Originality, innovation, fashion-forward design, an avant-garde approach and exciting aesthetics played a very important part in the collections by the likes of Mariou Breuls, Federico Cina, Stevenvandery, Mette Sterre Enterprise, Andrahandaricstudio, and Sandra Stachura.

Also worth mentioning the interesting variations on the sportswear and streetwear themes offered by Bluedenîmes x Minou Lejeune x Tyson Ernste, Rico Berger, Nellafolla, Peer Cox, Han + Inge, juliëtte Heijnen and litichevskaya

Shown under the MAFAD umbrella, I found interesting the choice of fabrics and garment construction by Lise van Wetten.

Pushing the boundaries with the aim of provoking a reaction was certainly one of the prevailing moods as in the case of Maarten van Mulken and of the provocative collection by Les Deux Garçons, which was indeed a perfect example of The Emperor’s New Clothes fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen.
