THE FUTURE GENERATION

The best young designers, selected among 36 students from a number of European fashion design and footwear design schools, were recently awarded at Porto.MODAPORTUGAL, the Fashion Design competition that connects international students with leading players of the Portuguese fashion industry.

Among the winners in the Fashion Design category, Beatrice Mason, Concepcion Martinéz, Cyril Bourez, Felipe Augusto, Jaehwa Rhee Soorhee, Marylin Hampartzounian and Olitia Vlad whereas Barbara Bugyíková, Daniel Gonçalves, Jaime López and Stephanie Lundby were awarded in the Footwear Design category.

The collection by Beatrice Mason from Polimoda in Italy was a study between the natural and the artificial whereas Concepcion Martinéz from IED in Madrid created a collection for her label möh based on the concept of “inhabited clothes”. Cyril Bourez from La Cambre in Belgium payed tribute to iconic fashion houses whereas Felipe Augusto from Modatex in Portugal played with the concept of skirts and aprons. Jaehwa Rhee Soorhee from London College of Fashion in the United Kingdom focused on the Korean fashion heritage and on biomimicry, Marylin Hampartzounian from ESMOD in Paris referenced matadors’ attire while Olitia Vlad from AMD in Germany was inspired by the traditional clothes of the Kalasha women.

The other participating fashion schools and colleges were ESAD and FA.ULisboa in Portugal, the Tomas Bata University in the Czech Republic, Arsutoria Schoool in Italy, the Lisbon School of Design and the Academia de Design e Calçado in Portugal.

The international jury comprised of fashion professionals including Jo Van Landeghem from Creamoda in Belgium, Sérgio Machado from Trend Union in Paris, the German photographer Sevda Albers, Marco Poli from Fashion Illustrated in Italy, the fashion consultant Miguel Flor, the fashion designer Pilar Dalbat, the fashion industry professional Nicky Gray and, last but certainly not least, Eduarda Abbondanza, the President of ModaLisboa who acted as President of the Jury. The winners were announced during an exclusive dinner and award ceremony at the extraordinary Palácio da Bolsa.

The event program included seminars on subjects such as “Buying in Europe” and “Sourcing Back to Europe” as well as factory visits to companies such as Adalberto Estampados, Calvelex, Crispim & Abreu, and Polopique.
