Until November 18th, 2018 about two hundred photographs selected from Carla Sozzani’s photograph collection can be admired at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Former editor-in-chief of Elle and Vogue, Carla has collected photos throughout her career and, in 1990, she first displayed them in her gallery, Galleria Carla Sozzani, which has been under the aegis of the Sozzani Foundation since 2016, and continues to be the heart of its first concept store founded in 1991 in the center of Milan at 10 Corso Como. She began to exhibit a great deal, working closely with some of the world’s most famous photographers, such as Annie Leibovitz, Sarah Moon, Paolo Roversi, David Bailey, Hiro, and David LaChapelle. Her special friendship with Helmut Newton not only led them to organize four exhibitions in Milan: “Portraits of Women” in 1993, “Impressions, Polaroids” in 1996, “Us and them” in 1999 – along with his wife June – and “Yellow Press” in 2003, but also this one in Berlin. Over two hundred photographs were selected from thousands in her collection. The exhibition includes fashion photos, as well as experimental photos by Berenice Abbott and Duane Michals, portraits by Francesca Woodman and Daido Moriyama, still-lifes by Man Ray and William Klein and, finally, a focus on black and white images that represent an exciting plunge into the past, without leaving out iconic and unpublished photogaraphs. The set-up was studied to enhance and make the most of the location. November 18th, 2018 – Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin.
