Modalisboa: collective thinking
All the strength of plurality in the 53rd edition of Modalisboa
by Alberto Caselli Manzini, Ph. Ugo Camera
In a constant dialogue between the historical memory of the city, the dynamics of the present and the projects that look to the future, Lisbon launches the 53rd edition of its fashion week, opening the doors to innovation.
The city changes, evolves, and so Modalisboa does the same, selecting a new location to introduce their Spring-Summer 2020 collections. The Palácio Sinel de Cordes and the Mercado de Santa Clara, the Antigas Oficinas Gerais do Exército doesn’t represent just a simple change of address: located in the heart of Lisbon, they design a space meant for to an increasingly cosmopolitan audience.
Collective is the theme chosen for the edition that was held from 10th to 13th October. The opportunity to make fashion, in fact, acquires a true meaning only when it is made to happen together, in a plurality of skills and visions that goes from trend research to prototype design, without neglecting today the ethical demands in the sphere of production.
On the catwalk, in addition to the most established names, many new talents were ready to compete with an international event, able to connect them with the most interesting key-players in this field.
AWAYTOMARS proposed a collection dedicated to color, with pictorial and acrylic effects alternating with the essential style of ‘denim on denim’ looks.
COSTANÇA ENTRUDO focused on the analysis of shapes and volumes, deconstructing the fabric with alternations of “full and empty”, while prints expressed themselves in geometric patterns.
In the KOLOVRAT proposal, oversize outfits and linear silhouettes embraced a genderless approach, inspired by the theme of recycling and trash-culture.
Even RICARDO ANDREZ, faithful to his brand DNA, looked to circular economy with a collection made of fabrics from stock, telling how style experimentation can match a green and conscious soul.
In addition to the institutional shows, there are two projects that Modalisboa is carrying on with growing enthusiasm: SANGUE NOVO, their contest for emerging designers, is the creative forge born to give space to the most alternative expression.
From the 82 candidates from all over the world, ten finalists were able to present their collections, and among these, six designers will be given the opportunity to show during the next fashion week.
WORKSTATION is a multidisciplinary platform exploring the worlds of fashion, photography and illustration, symbol of a collective identity that has always belonged to the philosophy of Modalisboa. In the words of Eduarda Abbondanza, President of Modalisboa: “That is why we are collective. Because only the whole can build a better world”.
