Siena for Kids: the Tuscan city on a children’s scale
An eventful seven months to discover the beautiful town with tours, amusement and games
Seven months of child-friendly events, created thinking also about families traveling with small children. This is in a nutshell ‘Siena for Kids’, the new promotional initiative full of attraction and events. Sponsored by the City of Siena, the project gathers and organizes in a single calendar all the different opportunities that the small but magnificent Tuscan city offers to children, kids and parents.
Until March 2017 Siena offers guided tours, itineraries, workshops, shows, games and stories in order to provoke always new emotions thanks to cultural and artistic playful activities. Right now and for the near future, every Saturday from December 10th to February 25th, the ‘Piccoli Pellegrini’ event is taking place in Via Francigena. This is the first itinerary dedicated to children following the steps of ancient wayfarers. Urban trekking from 15.00 along the Via Francigena and the Piazza Duomo, where the “young pilgrims” can visit Santa Maria della Scala, one of the oldest hospitals in Europe. To accompany them on the walk to Porta Romana an exceptional guide: the medieval nanny Gioconda and her amusing anecdotes about the history of Siena, its hospital and the characters, like the ‘gittatelli’, i.e. the abandoned children, the monks and nuns, the above mentioned wayfarers, who populated the city at the beginning of the 11th century.
An authentic step back in the Middle Ages for the whole family. In addition, every Saturday and Sunday until January 6th, children and parents can experience authentic field initiatives and workshops dedicated to the soil, mushrooms and medicinal plants together with a treasure hunt in search of Christmas trees in the greenhouses and in the educational spaces of the Orto Botanico. For the little explorers also a long calendar filled with guided tours, educational workshops and scientific demonstrations edited by Accademica of Fisiocritici at the Museo di Storia Naturale that accompany the kids in the discovery of astronomy and fossils.
