Tefaf Art Exhibition

Excellence, skill, and elegance

TEFAF is the art exhibition held in Maastricht, the historic Dutch city famous for its charm. Exhibitors at this international event are divided according to their field of expertise: ancient, modern, and contemporary art, as well as design, photography, and jewelry, all from various countries around the world. The works are reviewed by a panel of experts in 29 different categories , which ensure a very high standard of quality  and  guarantee for the reputation  the event has always had in being one of the best and most popular events among collectors  worldwide (400 private jets in the city’s airport are counted during the days the exhibition is held). During the last edition,  there were as many as 262 delegates from museums  all over the world, including representatives from:  the Musées des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, who arrived to purchase works for the institutions they represent.

The great jewelry artist, Wallace Chan, was the first Chinese representative invited to the event, where he presented his famous artistic glass creations  and his large-scale titanium sculptures. He recounted the important steps he took that brought him from traditional art to  contemporary art and from east to west. Chan founded his gemstone carving business in 1974, at the age of 17 and, in 1987, he invented the Wallace cut, a carving technique that transcends size and which has led him to be dubbed the “Asian prodigy”, carrying him onto international fame. Chan has spent eight years studying and experimenting with titanium. Through this, in 2007, he surprised the press and public with his ethereal creations made from the most bio-compatible metal in existence.
