An Oscar winning queen

From Sofia Coppola’s film, Marie Antoinette and her era are revived in the costumes

designed

by Milena Canonero

Four Oscars, nine nominations, and a Golden Bear have made Milena Canonero the most sought-after costume designer in Hollywood. So, it’s not such a coincidence that costumes from films which have marked an era like “Clockwork Orange”, “Grand Budapest Hotel”, and “Marie Antoinette” – are all her doing. If in 2006 we fell in love with Kirsten Dunst as the fashionista queen, it’s all thanks to Milena. In fact, without stealing the limelight from Sofia Coppola and her able directing skills, the costumes worn by the star of the film  in every little detail, from lace to precious stones, from embroidery to fabrics, and models with flounces  decreed Milena’s success. A series of costumes that faithfully reproduce the style of women’s clothing in the 18th century. This makes it is easy to imagine why Museo del Tessuto, the textile museum in Prato, has selected the costumes that Milena Canonero created for Sofia Coppola’s film to inaugurate its 2018 exhibition season. In collaboration with Sartoria The One in Rome , the holder of a vast legacy of costumes that recounts the entire history of the world of entertainment  the exhibition, “Marie Antoinette. The Costumes of an Oscar Winning Queen”. The date that was selected was not unintentional. It was intended to coincide with another exhibition showing at the museum: “Whimsy  and Reason.  Elegance in  Eighteenth-Century Europe”, dedicated to the evolution of style and trends. A sort of unique journey through fashion, textiles, and the decorative arts in the 18th century, enriched by more than twenty pieces worn by the actors in Sofia Coppola’s film.
