Cariaggi’s philosophy

Cariaggi, excellence Made in Italy, and an international reference point in the production of fine yarns, bets on sustainability as a corporate value, investing in programs to improve environmental impact and reduce energy consumption deriving from industrial processes. From a constant commitment towards the environment, the “Organic Cashmere” project was created in 2015: a farm located in an unspoilt area of Inner Mongolia, where the entire life cycle of the animals (a limited group of Hircus Laniger goats) and the territory are constantly monitored to ensure the preservation of the places of origin of raw materials. Cariaggi’s attention also involves plant-based coloring techniques with the creation of Systema Naturae: a dyeing process that is entirely chemical-free, obtained through the infusion of natural elements such as berries or roots. Rubia tinctorium is a herbaceous plant of the rubiaceae family. From the roots harvested in autumn, we extract, through a watery solution, an important red dye. The soil on which the plant is grown has a significant effect on the shades of colour produced: scarlet red is obtained from the plants grown in soil rich with humus and calcium carbonate, and brick-red is the colour generated when the plant grows in soil rich with clay. Proof of the historical importance of this plant is provided by the results of the tests performed on the colours found in Renaissance tapestries; residues of the dye were also found in the dye-works in Pompei. The red of the Madder plant was the most common colour used in the ancient European civilizations.
